Ayurvedic Treatments
Ayurvedic Medicinal Treatment method is an ancient natural healing method which has been practised for 2600 years up to date. Way back in the history, Lord Gautama Buddha’s time Jivaka was one of the greatest herbal treatment healer and a physician for many Asian countries. He was honoured by King Bimbisara and his teacher, Atreya, the founder of Herbal Treatments during that time. Jivaka was also a close associate of Lord Buddha. In many occasions Jivaka was blessed by Lord Gautama Buddha for his herbal treatments and his dedication to treat the monks and to Lord Buddha 2560 years ago. Jivaka treated Lord Buddha’s bleeding foot which was cut by a sharp slice of granite. Because of this treatment to Lord Buddha along with other ailments, Doctor Jivaka now resides in Thusita Heaven as a Sothapanna God.
All of these literatures have been available to read in the eighth chapter of the Mahavagga of the Vinaya Pitaka. Special monks who meditate in Buddhist Monasteries, and very close to reach Arahath state, which is 8th state after Sothapanna state to the enlightment, can exchange messages lively with God Jivaka. This may look like a fairytale story but, these are true facts if you believe Buddhism or history of powerful meditation-methods. One day in Thusita is equivalent to 400 years of the Earth-days and God Jivaka resides in the Thusitha Heaven for more than 4000 haven years.
Having unfold little drop of history and Heaven, many people from around the world visit Sri Lanka to get these natural treatments, seeking relief from chronic conditions and achieving complete recovery through Ayurvedic therapies.
Ayurvedic Treatments for Arthritis
Arthritis, is a condition that causes joint pains and inflammation. It can happen due to frequent cold weather conditions and if you get exposed to cold conditions too often. The inflammation is due to the collection of water like liquid between the joints. According to western treatments doctors take out the liquid with a needle and syphoned out. In contrast, the Ayurvedic doctors treat them with an oil massage at the affected areas or with Pattu treatments.
If the treatment is for broken bones, herbal Paste is plastered around the joints for healing. Every 3 days it is replaced with a new Pattu(paste). These treatments are done free of charge at all Government Ayurvedic hospitals in Sri Lanka. Doctors at private places charge a minimal free to cover their electricity, plant searching and production costs.
Traditional treatments involve:
Herbal Oil Massages: warm herbal oils are carefully massaged onto affected joints to reduce inflammation and pain. These oils, often infused with medicinal plants, improve blood circulation, relax muscles, and restore mobility. The worst cases are sometimes treated with whole body is immersed in oil baths for quick recovery.
Boiled Herbal Medicines: patients are given herbal drinks made out of boiling roots, leaves and plants together. The solution is normally boiled from 8 volumes to become one volume after many hours of boiling. Though the herbal drinks are good for the body and leading to fast recovery, they are extremely bitter and probably you may vomit when you drink them for the first time. After second, third time you may drink without hesitation as you are recovering quickly. But, you have to tolerate the bitter taste and drink them. The herbal medicinal smell is not like tasting hot chocolate in London because, they have been processed in heated pots, to help detoxify the body and reduce joint swelling to quick recovery by cooling your body in 3 days.
Dietary Adjustments: during the treatments, patients must follow a strict Ayurvedic diet, avoiding meat and eggs while consuming plant-based meals tailored to their healing process. For some patients dried Harlmasso (dried Anchovies) curry made with dilute coconut milk with rice and other plant-based curries are given for all three meals. Perhaps, only the breakfast may be given with milk-rice with spicy Lunu-Miris, 20 minutes after taking the medicine in the morning. The meals are exceptionally tasty and healthy.
Specialized Therapies: treatments vary depending on the location and expertise of Ayurvedic places and doctors. Places like Sigiriya, Horuvila, Alawwa, Anuradhapura and the Southern regions of Sri Lanka offer unique therapies based on various specialities inherited from previous generations. Horuvila is a famous place to treat broken bones and broken joints. If it is not serious you do not need to stay there. Then all treatments with the prescription are given to take away. Certain drinks like Arista, and Medicinal capsules are given to take home. The other Pattu (Herbal Paste) you can made it at your home or at the hotel where the recipe of medicine could be bought from the specialist shops in the nearest town to your area.
If the accident is serious: then you have to stay in their Ayurvedic hospital/Hostel which is specially made for patients coming for the treatments. Frequently these villages are quite closer to jungles but safe to live with these Ayurvedic Doctors and Farming Families live in the area. Why it is closer to Jungles because, they can easily find herbal roots, leaves and plants what they need for the treatments.
Many patients who undergo these treatments experience complete recovery within weeks, regaining their mobility and leading to their normal lives.

Asthma patients also benefit from Ayurvedic treatments that focus on clearing respiratory passages (breathing tube- trachea) and strengthening the immune system. Common therapies include:
Inhalation Therapy: patients inhale tiny drops of medicated herbal oils, which help expel phlegm from their system with saliva.

The steam comes with extracted vapours from herbal leaves in the pot that will clear the breathing system. The thick cotton robe is encircled the pot in a cylindrical shape so that all vapours retain there to breathe.
Unlike using western medicines like Salbutamol Sulphate inhaler, the recovery after herbal treatments lasts many years.
Herbal Medicine: The juice is made from raw Ginger, Pavatta plant, Harthavariya leaves, and Gotukola and Murunga leaves. Salads are made with Murunga and Gotukola with scraped coconut, and served daily to improve lung function and running nose.
Arista and Kasaaya: made like a soup out of special herbal leaves, roots and withe plants. The smell is not pleasant along with the colour. You will feel this is your worst drink that you have ever taken in your life but when the recovery is around the corner you drink all without any resistance. A few drops of honey is added to make it a complete herbal menu. For good bowel cleaning they add Sahinda-Lunu (special Salt).
Dietary Control: patients have to follow a specific diet rule that excludes foods which are favourable to accumulate Mucus/phlegm again. The unique meal plans are there according to the ailments.

Then, the mixture is again mixed with hot cooked rice to make a seasoned Paste once again. My mom steamed the whole paste and finally added steamed rice with rice juice to mix properly and applied for my twisted toes when I was playing football in the school. (The recovery was within 4 days) The warm paste is then applied in a form of a plaster and wrapped around tightly at the affected broken area with banana leaves and tightened with bamboo sticks to keep them straight.
