Rice and Curry: Normally taken for the Luch
Rice is often accompanied by an array of curries made from vegetables, meat, or fish. The colours come automatically to the curries when you add the spices of Cardamon powder, Red chillies powder, Green chillies and Coriander Powders before start cooking. Spices like cinnamon, Ginger, Cardamom, cloves, and curry leaves not only add colours but also add the attractive authentic smells
Hoppers (Appam): These bowl-shaped pancakes are made from a fermented rice flour, coconut milk with bit of Baking Soda. Hoppers come in various forms, including plain, egg hoppers (with an egg cooked into the middle) String hoppers are like noodles and different from Hoppers where no fermentation is required before making.
Kottu Roti: A popular street food, kottu roti is made by stir-frying chopped flatbread (roti) with vegetables, meat, eggs, and a mix of spices. The rhythmic sound of kottu being prepared on a hot griddle is a common and enticing feature of Sri Lankan street markets.
Sambols: These spicy condiments add an extra kick to meals. The most famous is pol sambol, made from grated coconut, chili, onion, lime, and salt. Another favorite is lunu miris, a spicy onion and chili paste.
Fish Ambul Thiyala: A traditional sour fish curry from the southern part of the island. Fish ambul thiyal is made with chunks of fish marinated in a blend of spices and dried goraka (a tamarind-like fruit) that gives a signature tangy flavor and black colour.
Lumprice: This Dutch-influenced dish consists of rice cooked separately and adding cooked meat and vegetable. They all were cooked in a big pan with bit of oil, butter, onions and other stuff. Finally (chicken, beef, or pork fried rice), all wrapped in a banana leaf to add a typical smell.
Desserts: Sri Lankan sweets are a treat for the senses. Kiribath (milk rice) is a celebratory dish made by cooking rice with coconut milk. Watalappam, a rich pudding made from jaggery, coconut milk, eggs, is a must-try dessert.
